March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, and we will be sharing resources, short films, and podcasts about living with endometriosis throughout the month.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside the uterus and attaches itself to other organs, causing scarring, lesions, adhesions, and cysts. People with this condition often experience distressing symptoms, such as painful menstrual cycles, along with a host of full body symptoms (e.g., fatigue, digestive problems, back pain, etc.). These symptoms can be exacerbated by the menstrual cycle but can be experienced at any time.
British filmmaker and photographer Georgie Wileman lives with endometriosis. Her short film This is Endometriosis recently won Best British Short Film at the 2026 BAFTAS (British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards). Stories like Georgie Wileman’s help illustrate the realities behind these symptoms.
“Combining deeply private, self-documented material, intimate family archive, traditional observational footage and a collection of reconstructive memories, the film tells the story of a young photographer’s battle to stay in the present while facing a wall of disbelief. Seen through the lens of Georgie's beautiful, brutal photography, This Is Endometriosis is a human insight into the realities of living with the disease and a story about the power of community.”
